i think harry reid is a difficult position. he wants obviously something to move forward that helps address part of the problem and i think if you look at 2014 and you look at the midterm elections, look at key states where democrats have to defend, red states, alaska, west virginia is an open seat, arkansas, these are rural states where the democrats have a different perspective on gun rights and have a better relationship, if you will, with the nra. that being said, i think everyone has come to terms that something needs to be done and the question is what can be done, what should be done, then also, what can pass not just the senate, by the way, but also the house. that's why i think you are seeing this movement towards not universal background checks. i personally don't like that term because i think it exaggerates what the reality is. we're talking about criminal background checks, strengthening what is already in place so that it's fair and balanced for everyone. >> one thing, though, with the senate and dianne feinstein

i mean, isn't this harry reid's fault? harry had a chance to change the rules of the senate and he was too nice to mitch mcconnell and now look what we've got. there's probably more to come. your thoughts. >> i suppose so, though i remember not very long ago when we were all suffering under the george w. bush administration and there was a real fear that without the filibuster then george bush would have been able to put some of his very radical extremists on the bench and push through more of his agenda. so i understand the reticence to kind of unleash the nuclear option. and you know, i don't think you can necessarily blame harry reid for the unprecedented not just obstructionism but kind of paranoid lunacy of this new crop of senators who, you know, before i think we used to see this sort of incredibly paranoid mccarthyite apocalyptic view of american foreign policy among some of the characters in the house -- >> doesn't that make the case for why harry should have done, this because of the ted cruzes of the world and t

reid later this morning on "this week." thank you again, george, and let's quickly get it over to ginger zee for a look at the forecast. >> good morning, guys. what we're starting with, a snowman, not a big deal, and february you say but this was north georgia, 3 to 6 inches from blairsville, not so good on the road. accidents did happen and forced tow trucks all over. but what's going to happen is that same type of system. these are little clippers we call them, light snowmakers we call them, hit pittsburgh too and they got about two inches but just north of pittsburgh, cranberry is where the video you're seeing is from, got up to 6 inches and skiers around there are very happy. i'm not sure about the folks on the road there. anyway, more snow is on the way, some happening in eastern tennessee through western north carolina, asheville is on the line of that 3 to 6 which is more of the pink. 6 to 12 is where you see the magenta color, buffalo, watertown, west michigan going to continue to get that lake effect. new orleans,

on the democratic side, why did harry reid go ahead with the vote when he didn't have to? harry reid and democrats get to spend the next ten days saying that republicans are mounting unprecedented filibusters against the secretary of defense, that they are rolling hand grenades into the senate and they won't cooperate with barack obama. is. >> warner: helps them make that point. mark, how does this look over tent gone to the folks are talking to you there there? >> it lookser the to believe people overseas. inside the pentagon they are consumed right now with the sequester. the looming $500 billion and budget cuts. they don't need this monkey wrench thrown into the works. hagel has support in the pentagon but there's leeriness, he didn't do very well in his confirmation hearing and there is blood in the water and the they're moving inÑi for the kil. basically i think what's happening and what happened today is the sense that this is another ten days for drips, drips, drips that could send his nomination into a tail spin. but basically the military's professional. ash cart
